Some ISO Standards have or are changing during 2015 to 2018
Why have ISO 9001, ISO 14001 changed and why is OHSAS 18001 changing to ISO 45001?
ISO revise management system standards regularly to ensure they remain relevant and effective in a world of changing technology and business practices. The current revisions are aimed at ensuring that the clause numbers in each Standard reflect the same content.
What’s new in ISO 9001 and ISO 14001?
- All revised Standards will be easier to integrate with other Standards (using Annex SL).
- On all revised Standards ‘Preventive Action’ is being replaced, with more emphasis on risk management.
- All Standards will have more emphasis on the Context of the Organisation.
- In all Standards some terminology has changed.
- ISO 14001: Aspects and Impacts are still important but now part of a wider risk management activity.
- ISO 14001: Legal and other requirements’ to become ‘Compliance Obligations’ and will be related to the evaluation of Interested Parties.
- ISO 9001: No prescriptive requirement for procedures – but does require documented information.
Why is OHSAS 18001 becoming ISO 45001?
OHSAS 18001 is often mistaken for an ISO standard, however it has remained a British Standard for many years. But as it makes the transition to the ISO standard, using the Annex SL structure, it needs a name change because "ISO 18001" already exists as: (ISO/IEC TR 18001:2004 Information technology - Radio frequency identification for item management - Application requirements profiles).
What is Annex SL?
ISO published Annex SL with the objective of "delivering consistent and compatible management system standards” in an attempt to make this process easier all future management system standards will have these three key elements, making them easier to integrate:
- High-level structure.
- Identical core text.
- Common terms and core definitions.

The earlier you learn about the changes and how to make a smooth transition, the sooner you can get it right for your organisation.
As an example: If you already have ISO 9001:2008 certification, the current standard will be recognised and can be audited to until the end of the 3 year transition period, expected to be September 2018. For any new customers, ISO 9001: 2008 certificates ceased to be issued in March 2017. New customers will be required to certify against ISO9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2016.
The ISO 45001 standard is not due for publication until 2018
